World Honey Bee Day

It was World Honey Bee Day on 18th August and Hazells celebrated by posting on Facebook:

Shout out to our very own Property Manager Chris Oakes who has been a keen Bee Keeper for 12 years and sell his very own Suffolk Honey that would even make Winnie The Pooh jealous.

To commemorate this day Chris has listed his favourite Bee an Honey facts below and has shared some pictures of his very own bees in action.

1. Bees communicate by dancing – some of the notorious bee dances include: The Shake Dance and Waggle Dance
2. The Honey comb is based on a hectogon shape – did you know that Florence Nightingale used the honey comb shape structure to create the first ever recorded method is social distancing in the Crimean War. This effective method saved thousands of lives.
3. Bees have been here about 30 million years!
4. Bees fly about 20 mph
5. Bees have 5 eyes
6. An average beehive can hold around 50,000 bees
7. 90% of bees in a hive are femaile
8. Male bees in the hive are called drones
9. Foaragers must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 lb of honey.
10. The average forager makes about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime (about 6 weeks in the summer and 4-5 months in the winter)
