The Southgate Brewery, The Risbygate Brewery and Saracens Head Brewery prominent others. The Golden Lion Brewery at the bottom of St Andrews Street South was started in 1868 by publican Thomas Simmonds who had taken over a beer-house at 57, Guildhall Street, it receiving its full licence in 1857.  He continued brewing  until his death in 1884 when his widow,  Susan took over running the enterprise.  A relative, a James Simmonds must have purchased the brewery at the sale of it with other lots in March 1886 (see advert) because in 1889,  now in competition with Greene King the Golden Lion advertised recommending  ‘Strong Seasoned Ales and Double Stout” and the fact that  it was ‘Contractor to the Suffolk General Hospital’! Unfortunately it was unable to compete in the open market and ceased trading in 1896. Now called the Golden Lion Tap,  57, Guildhall Street was purchased by Bishop & Co owner of the Saracens Head Brewery (now the Hunter Club) in 1901 finally calling time in 1907. - [Culford Classic Car Show – update](https://www.hazells.co.uk/culford-classic-car-show-update/): We are delighted to confirm we will be one of the main sponsors for The Classic Car Show – Culford for the third year running. - [Sale of Sneezum’s Town Centre Shop](https://www.hazells.co.uk/sale-of-sneezums-town-centre-shop/): Hazells were delighted to be chosen by family run business Sneezums to act on their behalf in the disposal of their freehold premises in central Bury St Edmunds. - [Two New Occupiers Sign Up at Rejuvenated Riverside](https://www.hazells.co.uk/two-new-occupiers-sign-up-at-rejuvenated-riverside/): Riverside Walk in Thetford welcomes two new occupiers this spring to further enhance the rejuvenation of the Riverside area. - [Hazells – Expanding our Network](https://www.hazells.co.uk/hazells-expanding-our-network/): At Hazells, we are not just about Property Management. While this bill has the potential to transform how the private rental sector operates, the journey through Parliament hasn’t been as swift as expected. As your letting agent, we want to keep you informed about what’s causing the delays, how this impacts you as a landlord, and what steps you should take as the situation evolves. - [Hazells Histories](https://www.hazells.co.uk/hazells-histories-4/): The Witchcraft Act of 1604 brought in by James 1st/6th was only abolished in 1736. James’s own version of the bible has in Exodus 22: 18 “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” a powerful way of dealing mostly with women who were perceived as witches; mainly old, wizened and a little cranky. We associate the name Salem with witches, perhaps the most infamous witch trials of all were held at Salem in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. Then, over 200 people were accused of witchcraft probably brought about by what we know today as mass hysteria, 20 people put to death. This is why the name Salem is now vilified but somewhat bizarre considering it is a shortened version of Jerusalem; intriguingly we have a Salem Place in Kings Road (shown)! In Bury St Edmunds we too have had our fair share of witches’ trials. The so-called Witch-Finder General Matthew Hopkins from Manningtree, plied his trade in the town receiving 20 shillings for putting at least 200 people on trial, of these 18 were put to death in August 1645. His favourite way of finding a witch was to “swim” the poor wretched soul, tying their thumbs to their big toes and immersing them in water. Those who swam were guilty, catch 22! Eventually he was exposed as a charlatan and disappeared, dying in 1647. In 1664, Bury was the scene for another witch trial; that of two Lowestoft widows Amy Duny and Rose Cullender, both were executed on the most trivial flimsy evidence. - [Renters Rights Bill 2025](https://www.hazells.co.uk/renters-rights-bill-2025/): With the bill now at the Committee Stage, it is likely that we will see this made Law this year. - [A Day In The Life](https://www.hazells.co.uk/a-day-in-the-life/): I would not have thought as a child that I would end up where I am today. I mean who when asked the question ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ responds with ‘A Lettings and Property Manager!’ - [Horringer Court](https://www.hazells.co.uk/horringer-court/): Horringer Court Estate is a large sprawling development, some once in the parish of Horringer; built by Hardy & Co of Southend, H C Janes / Barratt Homes, M Fallows Ltd and the Bury Development Company in the 1960s to 80s. The estate’s name is indelibly linked to Horringer Court a large house known to many now as Clarice House and the Bannantyne Health Club and Spa. A former servant’s house of the Hervey family of Ickworth, was purchased by prolific Bury builder, William Steggles in 1837 naming it The Red House, strangely also the name of a nearby inn on the Bury to Horringer road. Though limekilns were on site it is doubtful that Steggles was responsible for all the numerous tunnels used to extract chalk for these as by the early 1870s the workings emanating from large pits at the rear were no longer in use. A Reverend Robert Fox then bought the Red House until it was acquired by his former tenant Edward Hawkins Esq JP a gentleman who demolished it, building his fine Arts & Crafts Horringer Court residence. Financially overstretching himself he owned it up to around the outbreak of WW1; then there were several subsequent owner occupiers/renters until a local automotive dealer Rowland Todd bought the property in 1947, his wife Edith an accomplished artist. The connection with the Todd family remained until Horringer Court was sold in 1983 and again in 1992 becoming a nursing home until 1999. After a major internal refurbishment, new owners, the King family (a member collected Clarice Cliff pottery) commenced trading in 2001 advertising it as a Residential and Day Spa and Health Club until  purchased by TV’s ‘Dragons Den’ entrepreneur, Duncan Bannatyne. - [HAPPY RETIREMENT CHRIS](https://www.hazells.co.uk/happy-retirement-chris/): Since 1985, Chris has been involved in residential property management in both a corporate setting (Greene King) and in private practices. Their names are recorded in a book of remembrance in the Cathedral, the pages turned daily. In the distance can be seen a wall pre-Borough Offices, the house it belonged to destroyed by fire in 1929. Still constant is Angel Corner, which once housed the Frederic Gershom Parkington clock collection left in memory of John Parkington killed in WW2. The clocks were subsequently moved to the Manor House Museum after burglaries. - [Renters Rights Bill 2024](https://www.hazells.co.uk/renters-rights-bill-2024/): The Renters Rights Bill: Advancing Tenant Protections, But What About Landlords? - [Hazells at the Culford Classic Car Show 2024](https://www.hazells.co.uk/hazells-at-the-culford-classic-car-show-2024/): On Sunday 14th July we enjoyed a glorious day out at the Culford Classic Car Show, returning as sponsors for the second year in a row. The executors of his will eventually sold this as it had been on the market since 1798. An offer was put in by a newly formed business partnership, that of former Bury wool merchant William Buck and newcomer to Bury, Benjamin Greene a brewer from Oundle, Northamptonshire, the year 1805!  Benjamin’s third son, Edward eventually took over running the brewery leading to an amalgamation with Frederick King’s, St Edmunds Brewery in 1887,  becoming Greene King,  now the largest independent brewery in the country. - [Hazells Tours the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds](https://www.hazells.co.uk/hazells-tours-the-theatre-royal-bury-st-edmunds/): As one of the sponsors of The Theatre Royal the Hazells’ Team took advantage of an organised tour led by one of the excellent Theatre guides, Tony Howard, ably supported by Maggie.
